Description

The new Brooks Brothers 6-button BD is inspired by this design and is aptly named "6 Button BD" (though I suspect it should really be "Buttons"). Tracing the original pattern resulted in oddly narrow shoulders and a wide body. The balance wasn't quite right. So this time, we based it on the Modified BD that WORKERS has been making for the past 10 years. However, we incorporated some of the original's distinctive features. Specifically, the length is just under 80cm, with a strong upward curve towards the armpits. The first front button is positioned a little lower. The cuff buttons are positioned higher, closer to the sleeve. The shape of the sleeve opening. Large pockets. The cuffs are wide, then gathered to create a smaller cuff. The stitching is also unique: the shoulder yoke is stitched only at the front. The placket and armholes are chain-stitched. The bottom front edge has a deep fold and a curved shape. The buttonholes at the collar tips are stitched with the collar stitching. The entire garment is sewn with extremely fine stitches. And once again, the white thread is cotton. We've gone to great lengths to create this. And of course, we're going to use special materials too! So, creating a label is a given. The buttons were the hardest part. The originals were 9.5mm and 8mm. In Japan, standard sizes simply don't exist. I thought, "Well, they're resin buttons, so even if we make a lot, the price shouldn't be that high," and placed an order, but I got a terrifying quote: "Because it's a small custom order, the unit price is 4.5 times higher." But, it's a memory, so I'll do it. The result... I realized just how important button size is. It makes a huge difference in the overall feel. The color is also a bit whiter than the yellowish resin used in the Modified BD. I wonder if this will look more vintage as it yellows...? The fabric is Supima Oxford in three colors. Actually, the blue is currently being custom-made in two colors: Blue Pale (a lighter blue) and Blue Myconos. The color difference is subtle, but there's a reason why I went to the trouble of ordering it custom. A few years ago, I went to Perlinger, a German tannery. There I saw leather with subtle color differences. It was a world of how many shades of blue there are! The supplier was, of course, the world-renowned H. Seeing this was a real eye-opener for me. "These subtle differences, enjoying them is what fashion is all about, and it's the joy of living," I thought. When it comes to custom-made fabrics, we tend to create things with "unusual patterns" or "unusual fabric weaves." Those are interesting in their own way because they're fabrics that aren't readily available, but this is a different direction. In a sense, I think it's true luxury. Two colors of corduroy for a wintery twist. And of course, chambray, a staple of WORKERS. A fabric that's fun to watch change in color after washing. The right page shows the original that I used as a reference for the specifications. This particular piece is too big, so it's only a reference for the "specifications." I used a different piece for the overall silhouette reference. When I'm using something as a reference, I try to collect as many as possible, compare the differences in size and specifications between individual pieces, and find the best balance between "authenticity" and "wearability/functionality." (Thanks to this, I have an unusually large amount of clothes at work, so I'll start an online shop when I retire.) Features of the 6-button design: 5 buttons on the placket + 1 button on the collar stand, for a total of 6 buttons. As a result, there's a slightly wider gap between the collar stand and the first button on the body of the shirt. This allows the T-shirt underneath to peek out, which is said to give it a nice, casual look! However, if the T-shirt underneath is loose around the neck, it will look rather sloppy. It's best to choose a T-shirt that fits snugly around the neck but isn't too thick. I'd like to recommend WORKERS T-shirts, but their 2PLY T is a pocket T-shirt, which makes it difficult to match. Maybe we should make a 6-button inner T-shirt next year. Among current products, I recommend one with a thin binder neckline. Surprisingly, these are hard to find. Soffe's pack T-shirts are recommended because they have a thin fabric and a binder neckline, but recently, imports have been unstable, perhaps due to the weak yen.
