Description
Lot 801 is a typical pair of straight-leg jeans. They may look a little ungainly, but that's the true nature of jeans. The denim is made with American Apland cotton for both the warp and weft. Simply thinking, "Basic jeans are denim woven with yarn made entirely from American cotton!" But when I started making them, I discovered I couldn't find the standard 100% American cotton yarn! So, I decided to just make it from scratch! (Though I could produce a huge amount.) Apland cotton is an extremely basic cotton. It's imported to Japan, and the uneven yarn shape seen in vintage jeans is scanned to determine the yarn shape. Again, I control the unevenness to be moderate. The finished yarn is rope-dyed. Pure indigo dyeing is used without base or piece dyeing. The color is characterized by relatively little red and a strong blue hue. Furthermore, the fabric is woven on a power loom with selvedge. Low tension weaving creates a plump texture, preserving the inherent character of the yarn and the cotton. The finished fabric is Kibata denim, which is not pre-shrunk or singed to remove fuzz. It shrinks and twists when washed. However, before shipping, it is washed and dried to shrink as much as possible. Two patterns are available: Straight Lot 801 and Slim Tapered Lot 802. The hem width is consistent for about 10 cm from the hem, so the hem width remains the same even when hemmed up to a length of about 30 inches. All stitching is done with cotton thread. Thick thread is used for the side seams, the "komata" (the section where the left and right sides of the body meet), the yoke, and the obi. While cotton thread is used to enhance strength, it ultimately creates the uneven texture of the selvedge and the strong puckering of the yoke. This time, when creating fabric from scratch and making jeans, the focus was on "basics." To create a classic feel, cotton can be blended with other cotton sources, such as Peruvian and Indian cotton, in addition to American cotton. Even with indigo dyeing, there are ways to create a different flavor from pure indigo by using a base dye, but I chose not to do this and instead stuck to American cotton and pure indigo. As a result, the finished color has a strong blue tone, just as I imagined.
