Description

Leather Handle Tote Bag No. 4 canvas / 20.8 oz canvas Size: Medium / Long Handle The shape is a tote bag made in America with leather handles. The body is made of No. 4 canvas, and in terms of ounces, it can be 20.8 ounces, probably thicker than the original. This time, I deliberately folded the sides staggeredly without using the sides and sewing them. This creates a condition where bones are embedded in the sides, so you can stand even without anything inside. At least for the bottom, I used No. 6 canvas as a sample to reduce thickness. However, after seeing the factory, I thought, "This looks possible," and ended up using No. 4 for the bottom as well. Since sewing seems too difficult, I plan to use only the first lot for the body × size 4 soles. The tape is from a tape shop in Osaka. I searched and found a manufacturer that makes thick tape when I was making bags before. Since colored tape is not in stock, I had it dyed custom-made. The handle is made of domestic saddle leather. Stitching + riveting. The outer pockets are on both sides, front and back. Size: width 34 / depth 17 / height 30. The so-called original M size.

From here, the background and details of the creation -------------------------------------------------------------
I want to make bags again after a long time. But the ladies from Yata who used to make them have retired. So, I started looking for factories that could make them for me. This time, unusually, not near Okayama, but near my parents' home. When I went there... Hmm~, I had a conversation with the president. A story about modifying the sewing machine clamps. A story about how having multiple machines of the same machine can be a problem when it comes to emergencies. While using a pattern sewing machine (a machine that can stitch the same way every time), I wondered how to handle all the necessary things like plates and inputs, but the president did it himself... After a long time, I met a factory that truly felt like a factory, and that really motivated me too. I got so fired up that I thought, 'Can you sew even a size 4?' When I asked, the president said, "It's stiff~" and sewed it up. When I asked, "It was too stiff, should we stop?" Mr. M at the counter said, "That way of speaking, it means it's possible," so I went all 4-size. Thicker and stiffer than the original. Because of that background, this time the tag is not "Made by WORKERS" but "Designed by." It's really amazing how smoothly they sew this. Recently, Japanese factories have been increasingly disappointed when they inquire, saying things like, "We could make it in the past," or "We can make it, but it's not profitable (we don't need it while we can make it)." Since they don't run their own factories, they can't complain. (There are people who say that.) I don't complain that Japanese factories aren't good because there are no factories that can produce ultra-small lots, but I feel increasingly like, "Ah~ I wish I could make them. What a shame." As a result, these past few years have been deepening the focus on what I can do now. So even when I was told, "WORKERS, make bags for the first time in a while," I didn't give a pleasant reply. But this time was different. Truly, this factory is amazing.
---------------------------------------------------------
The handle is Saddle Leather by Noboru Ito. The base is Tochigi Leather. Mr. Ito has been using leather since the early days of WOREKRS, and I visited because it used to be open for visits. It's nostalgic. After that, the leather factory caught fire and it was quite a challenge. Since it was rebuilt through crowdfunding, I tried to support it even if it was a small effort. The leather factory was also revived, and this time I used it again after a long time... and it was still great. The factory that actually cut the handle also said, "This leather is great!" There are fewer scratches. Even among the same Tochigi leather, there are various leather shops here and there, each with slightly different finishes. Mr. Ito's saddle has tightly tightened leather fibers. The surface has a slight sheen finish. If you overdo this, you won't know whether it's leather or synthetic leather. That's where the balance is really good.
------------------------------------------------------------
However, when I tried making them again after a long time... everything had gone up in price. I was worried whether I could really sell at this price~ while trying to make them. If it's popular, I hope we can keep making different sizes, colors, and specifications in the future. By the way, last time there was a strange tote bag boom, and even though the quality was different, the resemblance at first glance appeared like bamboo shoots after rain, making it difficult to keep making them. I wonder how it will turn out this time? But even myself, the quality was perfect this time as well. Also, meeting a new factory after a long time made the production fun. Thanks to that, various new ideas came to me. After all, I have to be fun making things. Thinking about it that way, even if the skills aim to be professionals, the heart is an amateur endlessly. Because it's fun, I keep making them.
