From the 1930s to the late 1960s, direct dyes and sulfur dyes were mainly used for sweatshirts. The principle of fading in vintage clothing is thought to be a process where oxygen in the air and amino acids holding the dye undergo oxidative coupling, leading to hydrolysis and breaking down into carbon.
